Free-Range Country Chicken Farming in Kerala: Our Approach
Free-Range Country Chicken Farming in Kerala: Our Approach
We raise country chickens the way Kerala farmers have done for generations, with modern hygiene and vaccination.
Why Country Chickens
Higher protein (21-23g vs 18-20g), lower fat, better omega-3 ratio, zero antibiotic residues, heritage disease resistance.
Breeds We Use
- Tellicherry: Most recognised Kerala breed. 150-180 eggs/year. Hardy.
- Kuttanad: Smaller, exceptional disease resistance.
- Local mixed natives: Generations of natural selection for Kerala conditions.
Free-Range Setup
Half acre per 50 birds with tree cover. Raised bamboo shelters. Predator dogs + netting. Rotated every 4-6 weeks.
Daily Routine
6 AM open shelters + health check. 6:30 AM first feed. Daytime free foraging. 4:30 PM second feed. 6 PM head count + close.
What They Eat
30-40% foraged (insects, worms, seeds). Supplementary: broken rice, coconut cake, dried fish, azolla, moringa, turmeric. No soy, no pellets, no growth promoters.
Health Management
Full vaccination schedule (Marek’s, Newcastle, IBD, Fowl Pox). Natural support: turmeric+garlic feed, neem spray, apple cider vinegar. If antibiotics needed, bird removed from supply chain permanently.
Timeline
6-8 months vs 35-42 days for broiler. 5-6x longer = why genuine nattu kozhi can’t be cheap.
Free-Range vs “Cage-Free”
Cage-free: may never go outside. Free-range (industry): “access” to outdoors. Our approach: outdoors dawn to dusk, every day, rotated pasture.
Economics (50 birds)
Cost per bird: ₹250-350. Market rate: ₹500-700/kg. Modest but sustainable margins. Eggs provide steady income too.
