Giant Gourami Fish Farming in Kerala: A Profitable Freshwater Option

Giant Gourami Fish Farming in Kerala

Giant gourami (Osphronemus goramy) is a large freshwater fish ideal for Kerala’s climate. Its labyrinth organ lets it breathe atmospheric air, surviving low-oxygen conditions. Omnivorous, accepts vegetable scraps, rice bran, and pellets.

Why It Suits Kerala

  • Warm climate (25-35°C year-round)
  • Air-breathing — tolerates poor water quality
  • Low-cost feed: tapioca leaves, banana stems, jackfruit
  • Disease resistant, handles transport stress

Pond Setup

200 sq m pond, 1.2-1.5m deep. Lime at 50-100 kg/acre. Stock 3-5 fingerlings/sq m. Maintain pH 6.5-7.5, change 20-30% water every 2 weeks.

Feed and Growth

Commercial pellets first 2 months, then farm-made mix (rice bran 30%, groundnut cake 25%, tapioca leaf 20%, fish powder 15%, moringa 10%). Growth: 200g by month 3, 600g by month 6, 1.2-1.8 kg by month 12.

Profitability

1,000 fingerlings, 80% survival = 960 kg. At ₹280/kg = ~₹2.7 lakh gross. Investment ~₹50,000-60,000. Net profit ₹2-2.25 lakh per cycle.

Taste

Firm, white flesh, mild sweet flavour. Excellent for curries, grilling, pan-frying, pollichathu.
